What types of sweeteners are used in Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks?

The sweeteners used in Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start Powder Drink mixes include a blend of sucralose and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K). Sucralose and Ace-K are non-caloric sweeteners that are 600 and 200 times sweeter than sugar, respectively. The sweeteners used in Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start Ready-To-Drink includes a blend of corn syrup and sucralose.

Are Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks appropriate for people with diabetes?

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks can be used by people who want to manage their calorie and carbohydrate intake. Total carbohydrate for the powder prepared with 1 cup of fat-free milk is 24 g (or 1½ Carbohydrate Choices). Total carbohydrate for the ready-to-drink is 17 g (or 1 Carb Choice). People with diabetes should consult their health care provider to determine which nutritional products may be right for them.

Are Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks appropriate for kids, teens, and adults?

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start Drinks provide the nutrition of a balanced breakfast. With 150 calories and 13 g of protein per 8 fl oz bottle or prepared serving, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals, Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks can help meet the nutritional needs of teens and adults. For children 1-8 years of age, we suggest providing half the labeled serving size (4 fl oz) of Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drink. This amount would provide a more appropriate level of protein for children ages 1-3 and 4-8, who need 13 g and 19 g of protein per day, respectively. Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks are not intended for infants under 1 year of age. Check with your pediatrician for more information.

Are Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks appropriate for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Pregnant and breastfeeding women have increased requirements for protein as well as iron, zinc, magnesium, vitamins A & C and B vitamins, including thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12 and folic acid. Each Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drink provides at least 20% of the Daily Value for these vitamins and minerals plus an excellent source of protein. Check with your obstetrician if you have any questions about the nutritional products that may be right for you.

Do Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks contain caffeine?

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start products do not contain any added caffeine. However, the Chocolate varieties contains a small amount of naturally occurring caffeine contributed by the cocoa (<5 mg caffeine per serving). The Café Mocha Ready-to-Drink does not contain caffeine from coffee.

Are Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks gluten-free?

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start ready-to-drink bottles are gluten-free.

While Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start powder drink mixes do not contain wheat ingredients, they are manufactured on the same equipment with other products that do contain wheat ingredients. Because of this, the powders cannot be considered gluten-free.

Do Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks contain any of the Top 8 allergens as identified by the FDA?

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start ready-to-drink bottles and powder drink mixes contain milk and soy ingredients. They do not contain wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, or eggs.

Are Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks suitable for people with lactose intolerance?

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start ready-to-drink bottles are suitable for people with lactose intolerance but not for individuals with galactosemia.

Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start powder drink mixes contain nonfat milk and therefore are not suitable for people with lactose intolerance.

Are Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start drinks kosher?

Yes, Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start ready-to-drink and powder drink mixes are kosher.

What is the recommendation for storage once the Carnation Breakfast Essentials® Light Start bottle is opened?

Once opened, unused portions should be tightly covered, refrigerated and used within 24 hours. Also shake well before using and serve cold.
